11/3/09 Gunn Wins Bronze at Spikefest II
The morning started with a tense, three-set win over Monta Vista 25-16, 24-26, 20-18. Julia Maggioncalda lead the team with 11 kills, Teresa Skelly had 10, and Allison Doerpinghaus and Kiana Choroski each chipped in with 5.
With that win, Gunn qualified for CCS consideration as it guaranteed itself a better than .500 finish outside of the tough SCVAL DAL division.
Their second match was against Sacred Heart Cathedral, and Gunn lost 12-15, 22-25. Teresa Skelly had 8 kills and Julia Maggioncalda had 5.
To capture third place and put themselves in the Bronze Division playoffs, Gunn would have to win their next match against Mount Pleasant, and they took care of business 26-24, 25-11. Teresa Skelly had 11 kills and both Julia Maggioncalda and Kiana Choroski had 6.
The Bronze Division playoffs began with the Titans facing Lincoln of San Francisco, who had earlier defeated Homestead, a team that Gunn has lost to two previous times this season. But the Titans came ready to play and defeated Lincoln 25-14, 25-18. Teresa Skelly had 12 kills and Julia Maggioncalda had 7 to lead the way. Nicole Grimwood lead the defense with 9 digs, and Shelly Kousnetz ahd 15 assists. Monica Cai also shipped in with 2 assists and 4 digs.
The Bronze Division championship match featured Evergreen Valley against Gunn, and the Titans once again took care of business 25-16, 25-16. Teresa Skelly had 12 kills, and the offense rounded out with Julia Maggioncalda, Kiana Choroski, and Allison Doerpinghaus all with 4 kills. Shelly Kousnetz lead the offense with 19 assists.
Gunn is now 17-20 on the season overall and 17-10 outside of league.
They will conclude their league schedule this week at Los Gatos on Tuesday and home against Mountain View on Thursday, which is Senior Night.
